Tiffany lighting - HistoryLouis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) is the creator of this famous design. He began as a supporter of Art Nouveau movement which was moving to overtake the current Victorian style of the times. Having success as a designer, artist, and a businessman, Tiffany started his first lamp making in 1885. In 1899 Tiffany lamps began to sell publicly and their success quickly spread throughout the world. Tiffany style lamps - How they are madeThe original Tiffany lamps were created in Tiffany Studios. Louis Tiffany oversaw the creation of these lamps but never actually made one himself. His goal was to combine stained glass, rich coloration and nature themes. Louis Comfort Tiffany started working on stained glass windows. He then decided to transfer his knowledge to lamps, as windows were a day time business, while stained glass lamps could also be used at night. Tiffany constructed his lamps using a standard two section method. First section was made of the base and the stem, and the second section was the shade. Being hand-made no two tiffany lamps were the same. Tiffany lamp bases were usually lit from gilt bronze and were made to look like objects that are associated with nature. Trees, hills and flowers are the usual elements of a tiffany lamp. Tiffany shades were made from many pieces of Favrile glass connected by a framework also made of gilt bronze. Louis Comfort Tiffany patented his first glass-lustering technique in 1881. He continued to experiment with new techniques, and some of them are even used by craftsman of today.
